Barter Is Usefull In This Economy

by Terry Lamb

Given the severe problems in today's U.S. economy and throughout the world, lots of entrepreneurs running smaller firms have understandable concerns about the future. An useful approach to ensuring commercial survival is to trade with others for needed merchandise and services. Individuals especially tend to turn to barter as an approach to buying or selling when crises hit and sales figures are down.

Initiating a trade exchange with another company is usually easier if you are familiar with the owner, sales associates, or have done business with them in the past. This makes the process go much smoother and enables both parties to better establish a trusting relationship.

I f you ever decide to try to barter, figure out an appropriate exchange. Nearly any item or service that one can buy or sell is likely open to the bartering process as well. Use your imagination. You may be able to offer your services as a welder and painter in exchange for having a new canvas sewn for your boat. Use what skills or products you have available in order to bargain for what you want in return. Get creative!

The key to the barter system is to make sure that you make a trade that is fair to both parties. If you haggle over goods and services with somebody who doesn't think they have received a fair deal, then they are unlikely to want to do business with you again. Make sure that both of you are getting a good deal so that you can barter again in the future and to avoid adverse publicity that may endanger traders with other parties.

Another factor to remember when swapping goods and services with another business is that this is an excellent time to take advantage of small business marketing opportunities. The economy may be bad now, but it will not stay that way for long. This is a great way to market your product for long term sales.

During tough economic times, a lot of companies struggle to keep operating. Do not let this happen to your own business. One way you can help your business survive during a tough economy is learning to trade with others. This might mean the difference between a success story and a failing business.

Starting up a trade exchange with another company can be easier if you have done business with someone from the other company at some point in the past. The process of small business marketing is made much easier and smoother and will help build the foundation of a long lasting and trusting relationship. Deciding what goods or services are appropriate to barter is actually quite easy. Almost any product or service that can be purchased or sold can also be used for negotiation. Pest control, lawn service, accounting work, and even pet grooming are all services that are worthy of the process.
